Sheila Cherfilus-McCormick's Statement on the Recent Supreme Court Haitian TPS Ruling

Today’s decision is not just a Haitian issue. It’s an American economic issue.

As the only Haitian American Democrat to serve in Congress, I know firsthand the sacrifices Haitian families with Temporary Protected Status have made. They have worked hard, paid taxes, built businesses, filled critical jobs, and strengthened our economy.

While the Supreme Court ruled in this direction, it does not mean this administration should move in this direction. States like Florida stand to take major economic hits, and the ripple effects will be felt across this country.

Removing thousands of hardworking people from our workforce will disrupt industries, weaken small businesses, reduce tax revenue, and hurt local economies at a time when families are already struggling with rising costs.

The economic harm is undeniable. Sending families back to a nation facing extraordinary violence and instability is not just unjust, it is bad for America.

This is why comprehensive immigration reform cannot wait. We need permanent solutions that protect families, strengthen our workforce, and secure our economic future.

For five years, I have fought for Haitian families, and that fight is far from over, because this fight is about all of us.
